Today while watching the fine TV show "Rome Is Burning" a black reporter from Buffalo inferred that Buffalo will turn on T.O's flamboyancy due to an underbelly of racism.
This is my letter to Jim Rome:
Jim,
I am a white man from Buffalo. I live and die all things Buffalo. I think the comments your guest made today are comical at best. To say the least, lets consider every town in this wonderful land of ours, some spec, some morsel, some part will have a racially sensitive aspect to it. If we want to be cowards and shortsighted about it- lets throw our hands up and call it racism.
Buffalo, a city where there was an elected BLACK mayor, will not consider (and ultimately dislike) T.O to be flamboyant because he's black- Buffalo will consider (and ultimately dislike) T.O because he's not a blue collar guy. Buffalo (just in case your ill-informed guest doesn't know) is bankrupt, dying, and rapidly fading away. Tough people come from there, I haven't met one guy from Buffalo that didn't have some blue collar chip on his shoulder.
We love the Andre Reeds, the James Lofton's, the Thurman Thomas's. This man just painted a horrendous picture of an amazing, culturally diverse town.
When are athletes, columnists, reporters, and talk show hosts going to understand that the term racism is in its entirety a synonym for hate? I find it incredibly funny that a black reporter feels fine with the notion of using such a strong word.
T.O is a great athlete, as is Ocho, as is Deon, as is Dennis Rodman- They just don't have a place in a city like Buffalo because they're people whom would walk around and expect the world to give them something, in a city where each person is scrounging to pay the rent.
A black man claiming racism at the drop of a hat is just the same as a white man wearing a confederate flag belt buckle - both are incredibly unnecessary (seldom can a belt buckle like that match anything other than deep denim...I mean come on), and inherently racist.
Love your show, love your honesty, and I love how you stood your ground on a very touchy subject.
Peace.
Chris Tatum
